SLED agents charge Pee Dee-area couple in death of infant

Burgess Darlington County Detention Center

COLUMBIA, SC South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents have charged a Pee Dee-area couple with child neglect following the death of their infant child, officials said.

Thom Berry, a SLED spokesman, said 25-year-old Torress Burgess, of Florence, and 25-year-old Tineshia Sanders, of Darlington, have both been charged with unlawful neglect of a child. The charge is a felony which carries a penalty upon conviction of up to ten years in prison, a fine at the discretion of the court or both.

According to an arrest warrant, both Burgess and Sanders allegedly placed that “1-month-old child at an unreasonable risk of harm which affected his mental and physical health and well-being.”

However the warrants do not go into further details about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The case was investigated by SLED agents at the request of the Darlington Police Department, Berry said.

Berry said both Burgess and Sanders are being held at the Darlington County Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
