A standoff between an attempted murder suspect and Columbia police at a residence on Fort Jackson Boulevard ended peacefully Thursday evening, according to department officials.

Jennifer Timmons, a department spokeswoman, said 56-year-old Morris Leonard Fine has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the incident.

Timmons said the standoff stemmed from an earlier altercation at a residence in the 4600 block of Fort Jackson Boulevard. Fine allegedly shot another man inside the residence following an argument between the men.

When officers arrived at the scene before 8 p.m., Fine remained inside of the residence and did not respond to officers’ requests to come out, Timmons said. SWAT and crisis negotiation teams were sent in order to resolve the situation.

Timmons said SWAT eventually made entry into the residence around 11:30 p.m. and took Fine into custody, Timmons said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries, Timmons said.
