Patrol: SC pedestrian killed in hit-and-run

The S.C. Highway Patrol is looking for a driver whose vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday night near Rembert, then fled the scene.

The patrol’s special accident reconstruction team is on the scene in the northern section of Sumter County, trying to determine what kind of vehicle was involved, a spokesman said Sunday.

Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock identified the victim as Elizabeth Lewis, 53, who lived in the Rembert area, about one mile west of S.C. 261.

Lewis, who was wearing dark clothes, had been walking along a rural road around 9 p.m. Saturday when she was struck, Bullock said.

After she was hit, the driver left the scene.

Then a second car happened along and struck the body, which was lying in the road. The second driver stopped and called 911, Bullock said.
