Columbia man dies Sunday in moped crash in Lower Richland
A 58-year-old Columbia man was killed early Sunday morning when his moped ran off a state road between Lower Richland High School and the Hopkins community, Richland County coroner Gary Watts said Sunday night.
The man, Charles S. Hughes, of 3421 N. Main St., was found next to the moped off the roadway, Watts said.
“The incident appears to be a single vehicle, (moped), that ran off the roadway sometime between midnight and 6 a.m.,” Watts said.
Watts said Hughes was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident happened in the 5100 block of Lower Richland Boulevard south of Garners Ferry Road, which goes to Sumter and is also known as U.S. 76/S.C. 378.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
