Cayce man killed in accident near Irmo early Wednesday

Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in a fatal car accident early Wednesday morning near Irmo, Lexington County coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.

The driver of a 1995 Ford Escort, identified as 29-year-old Maurice Springs of Cayce, was killed around 3:20 a.m. when his car ran off Nursery Road and into a ditch where it overturned after hitting a culvert pipe. Springs, who died at the scene, was trapped in his car, Lance Corporal Judd Jones of the SC Highway Patrol said. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Jones said.

An investigation is continuing.
