A Belton woman pleaded guilty to the ill-treatment of animals, the Solicitor’s Office said.
Julianne Westberry was sentenced last week to four years suspended to four years of probation. The Belton Police Department found dozens of dead and sick cats at her residence last year, authorities said.
Animal control counted about 40 dead cats and seized 31 cats that were alive in June 2014, the Solicitor’s Office said.
“When questioned by law enforcement, Westberry stated that she had been operating a cat rescue and because of personal issues she had become overwhelmed with the large number of cats and found herself unable to care for them,” the Solicitor’s Office said in a statement Friday.
Authorities said Westberry decided to abandon the cats and the residence. She is restricted from having any animals and will continue mental health treatment, the Solicitor’s Office said.
