Columbia police charged a man Monday after allegedly put a 7-year-old boy into a bathtub full of scalding water causing the boy to receive severe burns on his body.

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said 27-year-old Shane Isaac Johnson has been charged with infliction of great bodily injury to a child as a result of the incident.

Holbrook said Johnson allegedly put the 7 year old into the bathtub of hot water on Oct. 7 at a residence on Easter Street, located off David Street. The injuries the child sustained were so severe that he was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center where he continues to receive treatment.

Holbrook also said Johnson allegedly waited for two hours before taking the child to a hospital for medical treatment.

The relationship between Johnson and the victim is unclear.

Johnson has been transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where he is being held pending a bond hearing
