Aiken Sheriff: Meeting to buy Craigs List car really an invitation to armed robbery

One man is dead, another is being sought after an alleged attempted armed robbery on a rural road near Aiken city limits Wednesday afternoon, Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt said in a news release.

A woman told deputies that she and her boyfriend went to the shooting scene, on Willis Hill Road at Wire Road, after 1 p.m. to buy a car advertised on Craigs List. But the two men they met there drew weapons and demanded money.

The woman told deputies that she drew her own weapon and fired at the man pointing a weapon at her boyfriend. The other man fled the scene.

The two unidentified victims then got in their car, called 911 and drove to a gas station about 4 miles away to wait for deputies.

Deputies sent to the scene found the body of one African American male who had been shot. Witnesses said they saw another African American male wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt running from the scene.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the shooting.
