Sumter County Sheriff’s charge man with attempted murder after alleged hatchet attack

A Sumter County man was charged with attempted murder Monday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Fifty-year-old Charlie Sumter, III allegedly took a hatchet with the intent to kill another person, said Sumter County Public Information Officer Braden Bunch, adding that Sumter was throwing and swinging the hatchet at the alleged victim.

According to the arrest report, the alleged victim said Sumter had been up all night smoking crack and drinking before suddenly taking the hatchet and attempting to kill him several times.

The alleged victim didn’t require medical attention, said Bunch, adding that Sumter was arrested and taken to Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center.
