Mauldin house fire caused by hoverboard

A hoverboard explosion caused a house fire in Mauldin, fire officials said Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to Windbrush Lane off Miller Road about 2:50 p.m. after the hoverboard burst into flames, lit a chair on fire and burnt the carpet, said Lt. Christopher Walker of the Mauldin Fire Department.

Walker said two teens at the home had gotten hoverboards for Christmas.

One teen had taken his hoverboard off charge when the batteries combusted, causing the board to shoot about 15 feet across the living room, Walker said.

The home wasn't damaged by fire, but there was smoke damage.

No one was injured.
