UPDATE: Pedestrian killed Friday night on Garners Ferry Road identified

A man walking along Garners Ferry Road Friday evening around 5:45 p.m. died after stepping into the road and being struck by two cars, Columbia police said.

The man was identified as Samuel R. Ferrell, 52, by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts on Sunday. Ferrell lived in Columbia-area shelters, according to Watts, who said Ferrell's family was located in Chester County.

Ferrell was on the 7200 block of the busy road, east of I-77. Investigators talked to several witnesses and the drivers of the two cars, who stopped after the accident, police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.

“It is believed that he unlawfully stepped into the roadway,” before he was struck, Timmons said.

The Columbia Police and Richland County coroner’s office continue to investigate.
