An armed robbery turned into a shootout late Sunday night, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
A suspect entered Video Express, located in Columbia at 2717 Two Notch Rd., at approximately 11 p.m. and allegedly presented a handgun while demanding money from the clerk, said Richland County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Lt. Curtis Wilson.
Lt. Wilson said the clerk gave the suspect cash from the register, but was shot in the lower body when he wasn’t able to open a safe that the suspect also allegedly demanded to be emptied.
According to Lt. Wilson, the clerk got possession of a gun and fired shots at the suspect, possibly hitting him before the suspect fled Video Express. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department was notified that a man showed up at an area hospital with a gunshot wound, but released no other details.
The clerk was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury, according to Lt. Wilson, who added that the incident is ongoing and remains under investigation.
