Sumter police have charged two people with ill treatment of animals after Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies discovered a severely malnourished dog feeding on the body of a dead dog at the couple’s residence.

Officers came upon the horrific scene on January 25 as they served an eviction notice at a Carolina Avenue residence.

Monica Denise Daniels, 30, and Patrick James Simon, 22, denied responsibility for the 2 dogs when questioned at the time by deputies, Sumter Police said in a news release. An investigation, however, determined otherwise.

Animal control officers said the two dogs had been left with no water or shelter.

The one surviving animal, a 2-year-old boxer-bull mix named “Sugar”, was reportedly in good condition and will be available for adoption once her treatments end, the police said.
