Greenville police officer killed; suspect shot, killed himself
A Greenville police officer is dead and a known gang member reportedly took his own life while officers were trying to arrest him in the Nicholtown Community on Friday afternoon.
“We lose, we hurt, we ache,” said Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller. “No one wants to lose their officers.”
The officers were trying to serve a warrant at a house in the Nicholtown Community Friday afternoon. The suspect ran out of the house and officers gave chase, Miller said. The suspect opened fire on the officers, Miller said. The officer who was killed was hit with multiple gunshots, he said.
Officers gave him CPR and he was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he died.
The suspect continued to run behind houses and through the woods and on to a spur of the Swamp Rabbit Trail where he took his own life, Miller said. Two officers were giving foot chase and observed him take his own life, Miller said.
SLED is on the scene assisting in the investigation.
