A 15-year-old Irmo High School student was charged Thursday with possession of a weapon on school grounds after he was found to have a loaded handgun, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said.
The boy was turned over to the state Department of Juvenile Justice, sheriff’s department spokesman Adam Myrick said.
A statement from Lexington-Richland 5’s chief information officer Mark Bounds said “at no time was any student or staff in danger.”
The gun was discovered when “one of our students who came forward with information, which led to the immediate confiscation of the weapon,” Bounds said.

The gun was loaded, Myrick said in an email Thursday night.
The incident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
