Two boys to be charged in robbery of 11-year-old at gunpoint in Richland County

An 11-year-old boy was robbed at gunpoint while trying to sell his cellphone to a 14-year-old boy Saturday.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. in the 2100 block of Kathleen Drive, off of Broad River Road, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

When the 11-year-old met with the 14-year-old, the older boy pulled out a handgun and demanded the phone, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson said Sunday. Investigators later recovered the stolen phone.

The 14-year-old’s cousin – also a minor – was involved too, Wilson said. Both of the boys will be charged with armed robbery.

Wilson declined to say where the 14-year-old got the gun.

No one was injured during the incident. The two suspects were released to their parents pending a hearing in family court, Wilson said.
