Officials: 82-year-old bicyclist turned in front of motor vehicle, died

Police reported an elderly bicyclist died Thursday night after he collided with a motor vehicle while making a turn.

Harry Lee Mitchell, 82, of English Avenue was traveling southbound on the 5200 block of Farrow Road near Standish Street around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Officer Jennifer Timmons with the Columbia Police Department and Coroner Gary Watts.

A car was also traveling in the same direction in a different lane when Mitchell make a left turn in front of the car.

The car struck Mitchell, causing fatal injuries.

He was pronounced dead at Palmetto Health Richland hospital at 7:04 p.m.

An autopsy performed Friday morning indicated he died from multiple blunt force injuries from the wreck.

The department’s Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate this incident.
