A team of Columbia police, Richland deputies and agents from the State Law Enforcement Division arrested a man Thursday who they say refused to surrender to police the day before.

Donald Shavell Ward, 28, refused to come out of an apartment at Gable Oaks Apartments at 901 Colleton Street in Columbia on Wednesday, according to the Columbia Police Department. He refused to answer the door for about two hours.

Officers served him with a bench warrant Thursday for failure to appear in court – stemming from a December 2014 case where officials say Ward shot a man during an armed robbery on House Street. At that time, Ward was charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

After calling in the police department’s SWAT team and obtaining a search warrant, officers entered the apartment and arrested Ward on Thursday.

He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
