State health officials are investigating an illness that is affecting detainees at the Lexington County Detention Center.
About 120 inmates have been treated for some sort of gastrointestinal illness in the last 2 days, Capt. Adam Myrick of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said in an email.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control was on scene Wednesday to try to determine what is causing the illness, where it’s coming from, and how it’s spreading.
The detention center, which on Wednesday housed 762 detainees, has been scrubbed down.
“Detention Center cells, restrooms and other common areas have undergone extensive cleaning to slow the spread of the illness, “ Myrick said.
