KERSHAW COUNTY, SC An 18-year-old Camden man was charged Wednesday with several crimes after he was nabbed running from a home on Park Drive in Lugoff around 4 a.m. on July 11.

The Kershaw County sheriff’s department was alerted to the break-in by the homeowner, Sheriff Jim Matthews said in a news release.

The victim called 9-1-1 and told authorities that she and a small child, who was sleeping with her at the time of the break-in, were locked in a bedroom. She said she woke up when a burglar entered her bedroom; he was started and ran out of the room.

A deputy was waiting for the suspect, identified as Zachary Herbert, when he ran from the house. After a brief chase, an allegedly intoxicated Herbert spit at the deputy and resisted arrest, Sheriff Jim Matthews said in a news release.

Herbert is accused of taking medications from the home and breaking into a vehicle before entering the home.

He was charged with burglary (1st degree), breaking into a motor vehicle, resisting arrest with assault and unlawful possession of controlled substances following a burglary, Matthews said.
