Three suspects kidnap woman in stolen car, lead police on chase
SUMTER, SC Three Columbia men who police believe stole a car with a woman still inside crossed county lines during a vehicular chase Wednesday before they were arrested, according to officials.
Officers responded to a report of a vehicle break-in at Burke’s Outlet, 1121 Broad St., around 9:40 p.m., according to a news release from Sumter Police Department.
When they arrived, a chase of a silver Chevy Cruz ensued.
The suspects – Jordan Brown, Troy Sharmaine Burgess and Dashaun Kamal Scott – reportedly drove the vehicle into Richland County and crashed while attempted to cross a median on U.S. 76/378.
The three fled the vehicle on foot then were apprehended a short time later with the assistance of S.C. Highway Patrol and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
A 19-year-old woman was left behind in the vehicle. Police said she was not allowed to leave the car during the break-in and chase and do not believe she was involved in the crimes.
Brown, 18, of Martha Street, Burgess, 27, of Green Street and Scott, 21, of North Campanella Extension were charged with breaking and entering a vehicle and kidnapping. Scott is also charged with failure to stop for a blue light.
Three men have been charged with breaking and entering an automobile and kidnapping following a call that resulted in a chase into Richland County.
Police continue to investigate other vehicle break-ins on Broad Street and believe the suspects could also be connected.
The three were booked into Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
