Suspect threw 79-year-old to ground after stealing jug of coins, leads deputy on car chase
KERSHAW COUNTY, SC An Elgin man is behind bars after he broke into an elderly woman’s home, stole a container of coins, assaulted her then led deputies on a chase, according to officials.
Deputies received a report of a burglary and assault on a homeowner around 9 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.
When a deputy arrived, he saw a 79-year-old woman was bleeding from facial injuries.
The victim told the officer that Andrew Thomas Haynes, 23, broke into her home by breaking a window pane of a door. She said he had stolen a glass jug containing coins.
The victim said when she confronted Haynes, he threw her to the ground face-first, causing her injuries and breaking the glasses she was wearing, the release stated.
The suspect and his girlfriend left the scene in a Kia minivan, and a deputy spotted the vehicle around 10:30 a.m. on Wildwood Lane in Lugoff and attempted to make a traffic stop.
Haynes, who was driving the vehicle with his girlfriend and a small child inside, fled from the deputy and a chase ensued, the release stated.
The deputy was eventually able to get Haynes to stop.
Haynes’ girlfriend told the deputy she pleaded with him to stop and let her and the child out. She also told the deputy the stolen property was in the back of the van.
Haynes was charged with failure to stop for a blue light, child endangerment, burglary and assault.
He has a previous arrest for disturbing schools.
Haynes was booked into the Kershaw County Detention Center while he awaits a bond hearing.
