USC research center named for Palms

A USC Board of Trustees committee voted to name the Graduate Science Research Center for former university president John Palms.

The $33 million center, which houses school’s chemistry and biochemistry department, was built in 2000 on Sumter Street near Blossom Street.

Palms was USC’s president from 1991-2002.

USC opening welcome center in downtown Charleston

The University of South Carolina is opening a welcome center in Charleston’s busy King Street shopping district.

The university has bought out the remaining three years of a lease for space that used to house a jewelry store.

USC vice president of communications Luanne Lawrence says the center will provide a link with students thinking about attending the university. It will also welcome current students, alumni and friends of the university. The center will sell clothing with the USC logo.

The school hopes to have the welcome center open by August.

Clemson to build education center set in North Charleston

A new graduate education center will be built at Clemson’s Restoration Institute at the old Charleston Naval Base in North Charleston.

The university recently announced the Zucker Family Graduate Education Center will be built with a $5 million gift from the family of Anita Zucker, the chief executive of the InterTech Group.

The center will be a place where students, faculty and representatives of business can work on taking research developed at the institute and use it in the marketplace.

The institute is currently building a massive facility to test of wind turbines.

Benedict professor named to national health panel

Kimberly L. Peabody, assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation at Benedict College, recently was appointed to The Nation’s Health Advisory Committee. She will serve a two-year term as a member of the team.

The committee is selected by the executive board of the American Public Health Association. It serves as an advisory board to the editorial staff of The Nation’s Health, the association’s newspaper.

Prior to joining Benedict in 2010, Peabody worked at James Madison University, Oklahoma State University and Texas Woman’s University. Peabody currently is working on two projects funded by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health.
