WATCH: Dome placed atop the new Cardinal Newman School
A steel erector guided a 33,000 ton dome into place atop the new Cardinal Newman School building off Alpine Road in Columbia, SC, on Thursday.
The dome, designed by Butch Barnhart of McCarty Domes, was placed atop the new school building being constructed by Contract Construction. The new facilities replace the 50-year-old Forest Drive campus.
The new 110,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art building includes classrooms, science labs, media center, a 300 seat auditorium, fine arts areas for band, chorus, 2D and 3D art rooms, and a cafeteria.
The designer, JHS Architecture: Integrated Design, Inc., established the chapel as the focal point of the building.
There will be a private "cross setting" on Friday May 22, 2015.
