School bus plows through yards and house in Midlands

The school bus ride home turned into a terrifying scene for a group of Sumter County students, the driver and homeowners.

On Friday afternoon, a Sumter School District bus ran off the right side of the road in a neighborhood, plowing through a resident’s yards, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The bus struck the front steps and other exterior portions of a neighboring home before running over a chain link fence. After crashing into another resident’s storage shed, the bus came to a stop.

No one was in the first home that was struck. A contract worker was inside the house where the shed was damaged. Emergency medical services checked the five students of Kingsbury Elementary School that were on the bus and released them to their parents, the school district said.

The sheriff’s office didn’t report any injuries.

David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver struck a curb and lost control before going off the road. No charges are filed against the driver, Jones said.
