A recent study evaluated college campuses across the United States to determine which are the safest.

In addition to ranking the safest colleges in the nation, the Your Local Security study also rated the most secure schools on a state-by-state basis.

Using a variety of data, the study determined that Clemson University has the safest college campus in South Carolina.

Although Clemson was not considered to be one of the 25 safest campuses in the U.S., it beat out the University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina State, College of Charleston, Trident Technical College and Winthrop among many other colleges in the Palmetto State.

The study used information from the “U.S. Department of Education, or DOE, Campus Safety and Security analysis and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting” to reach its evaluations. It examined reports of hate crimes, violence against women, property crime and violent crime at two- and four-year schools with at least 5,000 students, according to Your Local Security.

Based on that methodology Clemson was deemed safest.

According to U.S. DOE data, the most reported criminal offenses at Clemson are motor vehicle theft (37), burglary (21) and rape (11), while the most arrests were made for liquor law violations (104).

In comparison, USC had 60 motor vehicle thefts, 16 burglaries and 11 rapes reported, according to U.S. DOE data. While the university with the campus in Columbia had fewer liquor law violation arrests (61), it had considerably more drug abuse arrests, with 245 compared to 73 at Clemson.

The USC community held a vigil to honor the memory of Samantha Josephson Sunday night at the Strom Thurmond Center Sunday March 31, 2019, in Columbia, SC.

It is not reflected in this study, but USC student Samantha Josephson was recently killed after getting into a car in the Five Points area, which she mistook for a rideshare vehicle, The State reported.

Following her death, Clemson’s student body expressed its condolences to its peers at USC, The State reported.

North Carolina was one of four states that was not included in the study — along with Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming — because of “insufficient data.”

The five safest college campuses in the nation are Lakeland Community College (Kirtland, Ohio), Benedictine University (Lisle, Illinois), Foothill College (Los Alto Hills, California), University of the Cumberlands (Williamsburg, Kentucky), and West Texas A&M (Canyon, Texas), according to the study.

Other than Kentucky and West Virginia, no other schools in the Southeast were in the top 25 safest in the nation, the study showed.

The Columbus Tech Police Department teamed together with area agencies Friday afternoon to conduct its annual drill designed to test its response to any possible active shooter situation at the institution.
