Benedict College professor dies in wreck on I-20

A Benedict College professor has been identified as the person killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 20.

Paul Korkutse Vowotor, 64, died Wednesday when his car collided with a semi-truck near mile marker 73, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a statement.

Vowotor was a business professor at Benedict for 18 years, according to the school.

About midday, Vowotor was merging onto I-20 West, near Two Notch Road in northeast Columbia, when he lost control of his car and went off the right side of the road, hitting the guard rail, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. His car bounced back into the interstate, went under a semi-truck and caught fire.

The driver of the semi was not injured, Watts said.

Vowotor taught courses in business administration, management and marketing at the historically black college.

“Please join the Benedict College family in praying for our fallen Tiger, Mr. Paul Vowotor and his family,” officials with Benedict said in a statement.
