Clemson University mourns death of engineering student

A Clemson University student is dead and another man is charged with murder.

Amarkeyon Jamonte Truesdale was shot and killed after getting into a fight on April 16, Greenville County Coroner B. Parks Evans Jr. said in a news release.

After Truesdale was shot in the torso, the 23-year-old Greenville resident died at the scene, according to Evans.

Truesdale was a junior engineering major originally from Lancaster, Clemson officials said in a news release.

“It’s difficult to make sense of Amarkeyon’s death at such a young age,” Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Chris Miller said in the release. “The Clemson Family grieves this loss with his family and friends.”

Two days after the shooting, Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies made an arrest, WHNS reported.

On April 18, Tanaj Hakeem James was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, jail records show.

No bond was set for James, who remains behind bars at the Greenville County Detention Center, according to jail records.

Clemson’s psychological services center is providing grief counseling to its students. Counselors are available by calling 864-656-2451.

No funeral arrangements were listed for Truesdale in his obituary.

Truesdale is the third Clemson undergrad to die in 2020. A junior who majored in Forest Resource Management died in February, and a senior criminal justice major died in January.
