Lexington district 1 says high schools will have graduation ceremonies with tweaks
High school seniors in Lexington 1 will have commencement ceremonies but with modifications to keep people safe from the coronavirus, according to the district’s superintendent.
“Our goal is to have the most authentic graduation ceremony possible while working hard to keep everyone safe,” Superintendent Greg Little said in a message to seniors and their families.
High schools in Lexington 1 will have their graduation ceremonies at each schools’ football stadium, Little said. Graduating students will receive two tickets for guests to the ceremony. The ceremonies will be live streamed and recorded. The recording will be provided to seniors on a DVD, according to the superintendent.
During the commencements, the schools will strictly enforce social distancing to protect students and their guest as well as staff, Little said.
Principals of each school will send information to the families of seniors about arrival times, temperature taking, masks, traffic flow, dress code, and more before the graduations.
The graduation ceremonies are scheduled for:
- Pelion High School, Wednesday, May 27, at 8 a.m.
- Gilbert High School, Thursday, May 28, at 8 a.m.
- White Knoll High School, Friday, May 29, at 8.m.
- Lexington High School, June 1, at 8 a.m.
- River Bluff High School, June 3, at 8 a.m.
Weather make-up days are May 30 and 31, and June 2, 4, and 5.
The decision to have commencement came after the district surveyed seniors about their thoughts on graduation and their school year.
The district received 447 responses and additional feedback from the Student Advisory Council, Little said in his message.
“Overwhelmingly, you said that you wanted to experience this moment with your class,” he said. “While we cannot control the circumstances that disrupted this year, we can try to honor your desire to experience this moment together.”
