Daughter of Jim Clyburn to announce run for Midlands school board

The latest member of the Clyburn family is taking a run at a public office in South Carolina.

Angela Clyburn, the political director at the S.C. Democratic Party and Congressman Jim Clyburn’s youngest daughter, will announce her candidacy for Richland 1 school board Tuesday, her campaign said in a statement.

Clyburn, herself an alumna of W. G. Sanders Middle and W. J. Keenan High Schools, said she was “proud” of the district’s accomplishments, but she is “concerned about the level of staff development and efforts to keep talented educators in our schools. Access to broadband and on-line learning are priorities of mine,” Clyburn said in a press release.

In a phone interview with The State, Clyburn said she also wants to emphasize “making sure parent and teacher support is there, especially with them going through this pandemic,” she said.

Clyburn is running for an at-large seat, in which all Richland 1 voters decide on a seat, during the Nov. 3 general election. She will file her official campaign registration Tuesday morning, Clyburn said.
