A candidate for Richland 1’s upcoming school board special election has dropped out of the race, she announced Tuesday.

Richland County native and professor Leslie Harvel, 67, made the announcement in a Facebook group for Richland 1 parents and community members.

“When I began this process in August, I was certain I would be in the United States for all of 2022. Last week I was notified that my job may take me out of the country for 5-6 months,” Harvel said in a Facebook post.

Harvel teaches at Concordia University Chicago/Hebei University of Economics and Business.

Harvel asked those who wanted to vote for her to instead vote for Robert Lominack, who runs an education nonprofit.

Harvel’s candidate status is listed as “withdrew” on the S.C. Election Commission’s website. The election for the at-large seat will be Oct. 26.

The State has reached out to Harvel.
