Three students at middle school in Columbia get sick after eating candy, officials say
Three students at a middle school in Columbia got sick Wednesday after they reportedly ate some kind of candy, officials said.
The eighth graders, all girls, are students at Hand Middle, school district spokesperson Karen York told The State. The Richland 1 school is on Wheat Street, in the Shandon area near Five Points.
One of the students was taken to an area hospital by EMS, York said. The other two students were picked up from school by their parents, according to York.
Further information on their conditions was not available.
“At this time, we do not know what the candy the students ate contained,” York said.
The incident is being investigated by school administrators and the Columbia Police Department, according to York.
Messages left with police weren’t immediately returned.
There was no word how the candy got to the school, or the type of candy that was involved.
