An elementary student brought an unloaded handgun to school in their backpack, a Midlands school district told parents on Tuesday.

Administrators at Batesburg-Leesville Primary School were told a student was carrying a weapon on Tuesday, the Lexington 3 school district said in a message sent out to parents.

A school resource officer investigated and found an unloaded handgun in the student’s backpack. No ammunition was found, and the school did not identify the student’s age or grade in the message.

“It is not believed that the student made any direct threats to the school or other students,” the school district said in its message.

“Lexington 3 takes school safety very seriously, and any student or adult who jeopardizes our safe learning environment will be subject to the highest discipline and punishment allowed by state law and school board policy,” the district said.

School was operating as normal in the district on Wednesday.
