Provost at SC State resigns ‘effective immediately,’ email says
A top official at South Carolina’s only publicly supported historically Black university has announced his resignation.
Frederick Evans, the provost and vice president of academic affairs at S.C. State University, announced his resignation in an email sent to colleagues on Thursday.
In the email provided to The State, Evans announces he has tendered his formal resignation, “effective immediately.”
Evans had served as S.C. State’s provost on an interim basis since 2021, and took on the role permanently in 2023. He had previously served as dean of the university’s graduate school, according to reporting at the time of his appointment.
“While I depart with a heavy heart, I do so with profound appreciation for the experiences, relationships, and accomplishments that have marked my time at the University,” Evans wrote. “I remain proud of the work we have undertaken to strengthen academic quality, enhance student success, advance research and innovation, and position the University for continued growth.
“Although I am stepping away from my official responsibilities, I will continue to support South Carolina State University from a distance and will always remain a proud advocate for the institution and its students,” Evans said in the email.
From his former position, Evans oversaw all of S.C. State’s academic programs and departments, approving curriculum, developing policies and instructional techniques, and otherwise supporting faculty and students’ academic needs.
