USC calls off August graduation ceremony in 2016
The University of South Carolina will not hold a graduation ceremony in August 2016, citing declining participation in that commencement.
USC typically holds three commencements — in May, August and December — but less than half of eligible graduates participate in the summer event, the university said. The other two ceremonies draw nearly 90 percent participation.
Ending the August ceremony will motivate students to complete graduation requirements so that they can take part in the May event, the school said. Students who finish classes next summer can take part in the December 2016 commencement.
The university said it will see how many graduates take part in commencements and consider feedback before deciding its 2017 graduation ceremony schedule.
