Earthquake rocks near popular SC tourist area for the first time this year

An earthquake rattled the Myrtle Beach area for the first time in nearly 20 years Saturday.

A 1.9-magnitude earthquake hit about five miles west of Bucksport, near Myrtle Beach, at 12:32 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It happened about 2.9 miles below ground, the USGS said.

This marks the 31st confirmed earthquake of 2025 in South Carolina. The last earthquake in the Palmetto State was nearly a month ago, when a 2.2 magnitude quake on July 16, struck near Summerville, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey.

There were 30 confirmed earthquakes last year in South Carolina, after 28 quakes were recorded in 2023, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The Bucksport quake was the first to hit near Myrtle Beach in nearly 20 years, according to data by the Department of Natural Resources.
