Fourth earthquake in past month returns to area near South Carolina dam

An earthquake has been reported near Greenwood, South Carolina.

The United States Geological Survey reported that an earthquake with a 1.8 magnitude was detected in Greenwood County at 2:20 a.m..

It is the third earthquake recorded in the area around Lake Greenwood since Sept. 14 and the fourth earthquake overall in South Carolina in the past month. Much of the seismic activity reported this year has been in the Greenwood County area with approximately 30 earthquakes recorded this year.

Thursday’s earthquake took place approximately 14 miles from downtown Greenwood near the unincorporated community of Coronaca.

As of Wednesday afternoon, six people had reported feeling the earthquake to the United State Geological Survey.

Lake Greenwood is an artificial lake formed by a hydroelectric dam built across the Saluda River.
