Attention all momma alligators and exotic pet owners. A baby gator found in SC

If you’ve lost a baby alligator the Prosperity Police Department would like to speak with you.

That’s because an officer, along with Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputies, recovered a baby alligator in a roadside ditch, police said Tuesday night in a news release.

At about 9:30 p.m., police said the officer and sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a baby alligator found in a ditch along U.S. 76 and Langford Street, according to the release.

The alligator was safely recovered and turned over to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for proper care and handling, police said.

Police ask anyone that believes that they are the owner of the baby alligator to call 803-364-2121.

“As always, if you encounter wildlife, please do not approach or attempt to handle it,” police said in the release. “Contact local law enforcement or the appropriate wildlife authorities for assistance.”

There was no word about what species of alligator was discovered in the ditch, but American alligators are only kind native to South Carolina, DNR data shows. Generally, alligators are found in coastal areas of South Carolina, and not believed to range as far north as Newberry County, according to DNR data.
