Record breaking ‘kill shot’ claimed by Canadian elite unit sniper
The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed on Thursday that a member of its elite sniper unit killed an ISIS fighter in Iraq who was 2.19 miles away.
“For operational security reasons and to preserve the safety of our personnel and our Coalition partners we will not discuss precise details on when and how this incident took place,” a statement published by the Toronto Globe and Mail said.
“The shot in question actually disrupted a Daesh [Islamic State] attack on Iraqi security forces,” said a military source.
A military insider told the Globe it’s a record that may never be broken.
“This is an incredible feat. It is a world record that might never be equalled.”
The distance shatters the previous record set in 2009 of 1.53 miles, held by a British sniper, according to the newspaper. The U.S ranks 5th with a sniper shot of 1.429 miles distance, according to a graphic posted by the Globe and Mail.
