Fort Jackson Memorial Day observance
FORT JACKSON, SC A wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 9am Monday, May 25th.
The ceremony will include a 21-gun-salute, wreath presentation at the flag plaza, and address by Fort Jackson Commander, Maj. Gen. Bradley Becker.
The public is invited to attend.
Although the first Memorial Day (called Decoration Day) was observed at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868 to honor the fallen of the Civil War, the observance was not accepted nationally until after World War I. Memorial Day honors the sacrifice and service of more than 620,000 American men and women who have died in military service.
