Dozens of South Carolina veterans were honored over the weekend by South Korea for their service in the Korean War.

Sangho Lee, a Republic of Korea deputy consul general, presented the country’s commemorative Ambassador for Peace medal Saturday to 48 veterans, all of whom are now in their 80s and 90s.

The S.C. National Guard and the S.C. Military Museum hosted the events, which was held in the Guard armory in Columbia.

Maj. Gen. Bob Livingston, the state’s adjutant general, told the group they had sacrificed so others could be free. “They don’t forget it,” he said.

The Ambassador for Peace medal began as a special memento for veterans who returned to South Korea through its “Revisit Program.” The honor has since expanded to veterans who can’t travel there.
