Palmetto health doctor honored for leading by example
Palmetto Health Baptist executive Dr. Mark Mayson has received Palmetto Health’s Lead by Example Award for 2014.
Mayson was noted for practicing a strong work ethic and personal accountability, implementing new ideas and solutions, and modeling the hopsital system’s values and standards of behavior.
Mayson, a patient and staff advocate, has supported the Safe Surgery initiative in Palmetto Health Baptist’s operating rooms. He co-chairs the Perioperative Services Committee, a role in which he supports other quality measures including surgical care compliance improvement and reduction of surgical site infection rates.
“He brought a voice of reason and collegiality to the Medical Executive Committee and won support by appealing to the scientific voice of each physician,” Palmetto Health Baptist acute care executive Greg Gattman wrote in Mayson’s recommendation letter. “His support for doing the right thing for our patients has been unwavering.”
Mayson is medical director of Palmetto Health Baptist’s intensive care unit and respiratory therapy; physician executive of Palmetto Health Baptist; and system vice president of quality for Palmetto Health. He specializes in pulmonary disease at Palmetto Pulmonary Group.
He received a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed his residency at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. He has been with Palmetto Health since 1994.
The annual Lead by Example award is given to a leader in the hospital system who goes above and beyond.
