Midlands Heart Walk raises $450K for American Heart Association
More than 5,000 walkers took steps to improve their heart health during the Midlands Heart Walk that raised $450,000 for the American Heart Association.
The noncompetitive walk March 21 included teams from more than 88 companies along with friends and family members of all ages.
The annual walk seeks to build healthier lives free from cardiovascular diseases as well as raise money to fight heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.
“This was a collaborative effort,” said Heart Walk chairman Sam Dozier, vice president of customer service at SCANA. “I would like to extend deep appreciation to the many corporate sponsors, donors and the Midlands community for the overwhelming generosity.”

The Retreat at Columbia Gives Back to Boys & Girls Club
The Retreat at Columbia joined the recent “Landmark Gives Back” project and raised $315 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands.
The Retreat is one of seven Landmark Properties communities that participated in an effort to give to an organization that serves America’s youth.
Last year, Landmark Properties asked their student housing communities across the country to help raise awareness and funds for their local Boys and Girls Clubs.
Each community was challenged to donate $1 per bedroom leased and raise additional funds through events on the property and in the community.
Throughout 2014, The Retreat Columbia had several fundraising events with residents, staff and community, including Cookie Nights.
Helping the homeless elementary for Hopkins student
Hopkins Elementary School fourth-grader Nasir Wright turned his birthday into a gift for others.
While planning for his birthday Feb. 7, the youngster decided to do something to help the homeless.
With assistance from the PTO and educators at Hopkins Elementary School, Nasir helped organize several fundraising events and presented a check for more than $1,200 to the Family Shelter this week.
Happy birthday, indeed.
