She won the lottery, but Midlands-area woman felt like she was having a heart attack

It’s going to be a happy Christmas for the family of a Midlands-area woman after she won a lottery jackpot, but it did not seem that way at first.

The Bamberg woman’s initial response to winning a $125,000 prize was to feel the symptoms of a heart attack, the South Carolina Education Lottery said in a news release.

She described having chest pains and feeling like her heart was racing while calling her daughter on Dec. 13 to share the news, according to the release.

“Mom, tell me, where you are going to put that ticket?” the daughter asked.

After laying in bed with that ticket next to her, the Bamberg woman began feeling better, the South Carolina Lottery said.

She started thinking about what she was going to do with the money she won by hitting the grand prize in the “Right on the Money” game.

“I’m going to have a happy Christmas,” she told lottery officials when collecting her prize. “I’m going to buy a truck and spoil the grandkids.”

The woman overcame 1-in-660,000 odds to win the prize after buying the $5 scratch-off game at the Palm Pantry #1 in Bamberg, according to the release.

Three of the $125,000 top prizes remain unclaimed, the South Carolina Lottery said.
