Midlands mom didn’t believe when daughter won lottery jackpot after both got tickets
A Midlands woman didn’t believe it when her daughter won a six-digit jackpot after they bought games to play together, the South Carolina Education Lottery said Wednesday.
“Are you lying?” the mother asked her daughter, according to a news release from S.C. Lottery officials.
When she realized her daughter really won the $125,000 top prize in a scratch-off game, she said both “went into panic mode,” according to the release.
Lottery officials said the winning ticket was sold for $5 at Beer and Tobacco Outlet in West Columbia. It was the first time the mom and daughter bought tickets together, according to the release.
“I was very happy for her,” the mom told lottery officials a few days after the pair cashed in the six-figure win from the Color of Cash game.
The women were not publicly identified because South Carolina is one of just a few states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.
With her prize, the daughter told lottery officials she plans to use the money to pay for school, invest, and do something nice for her mom.
“I always look out for mom,” the daughter said in the release.
Lottery officials said the daughter overcame 540,000-to-1 odds to win. One more $125,000 top prize remains in the Color of Cash game, according to the release.
Beer and Tobacco Outlet received a commission of $1,250 for selling the winning game, lottery officials said.
In a neighboring Midlands community, another six-digit winning lottery ticket was sold.
Someone in Manning won $300,000 in Tuesday’s Palmetto Cash 5 drawing, after buying the ticket at Short Trip #3 at 10297 Scott Ave., lottery officials said.
The winner — whose ticket matched the numbers 9-16-24-35-36, Power-Up: 3 — has 180 days to claim the prize.
