Midlands woman makes her friend mad after winning the lottery, SC officials say

A Midlands woman won a six-figure jackpot and kept a friend at the same time, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said Tuesday.

She didn’t say what was harder, after the Bowman woman won $250,000 while playing a scratch-off lottery game with her friend, according to a news release.

While she said she couldn’t have been happier to win the ticket’s top prize, she said her friend initially was mad, S.C. Lottery officials said.

Her friend got over any hurt feelings and the jackpot has not come between them, according to the release.

“She was happy for me too,” the winner said to lottery officials.

The woman was not publicly identified because South Carolina is one of just a few states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.

She won the jackpot on a $10 Money to the Max scratch-off game, which she bought at at the Quick Pantry store in Bowman, according to the release.

Lottery officials said the woman overcame 675,000-to-1 odds to win. Three of the Money to the Max’s game’s top prizes remain unclaimed.

The woman did not say what she would do with her newfound fortune.

Quick Pantry received a commission of $2,500 for selling the winning game, lottery officials said.
