Richland County man can’t believe he won six-figure lottery jackpot
In spite of doubts about ever winning the lottery, a Richland County man bought a ticket that turned into a six-figure jackpot, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said Thursday.
“Who wins these?” the man said, according to a news release from lottery officials.
In this instance, the Richland County man did and pocketed the $350,000 top prize, according to the release.
“I was shocked,” he said in the release. “I didn’t think it would happen to me.”
The man was not publicly identified because South Carolina is one of just a few states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.
He won the jackpot on a $10 Mighty Jumbo Bucks scratch-off game, which he bought at the Corner Pantry store on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, according to the release. That’s near the Shoppes at Woodhill and the Columbia VA hospital.
Lottery officials said the man overcame 857,142-to-1 odds to win.
Five of the Mighty Jumbo Bucks game’s top prizes remain unclaimed, according to the release.
The man did not say what he would do with his newfound fortune.
Corner Pantry received a commission of $3,500 for selling the winning game, lottery officials said.
