Patience pays off for man who bought six-figure winning lottery ticket in Columbia
After buying a lottery ticket in Columbia, a Midlands man went home before scratching off the numbers.
It was worth the wait.
The man hit the jackpot, winning $250,000, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a news release.
It was “a good thing” he went home and took a seat before revealing the six-figure prize, the man told lottery officials. “I was very shocked,” he said, according to the news release.
The man’s name was not released because South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
He won the jackpot on a $10 50X scratch-off game, which he bought at the El Cheapo on Farrow Road in Columbia, according to the release. The gas station/convenience store is near the junction with S.C. 277.
Lottery officials said the man overcame 810,000-to-1 odds to win.
One of the 50X game’s top prizes remains unclaimed, according to the release.
The man did not say what he would do with his newfound fortune.
El Cheapo in Columbia received a commission of $2,500 for selling the winning ticket, lottery officials said.
