Winning six-figure lottery jackpot is ‘once in a lifetime moment’ for Midlands woman

A neighbor might have been confused if they overheard a Midlands woman screaming from her porch recently.

She wasn’t hurt or in peril. The Lexington County woman was celebrating after winning a quarter of a million dollars on a scratch-off game, the South Carolina Education Lottery said Thursday in a news release.

“I started screaming. I’ve never won anything,” the woman told lottery officials. “I’ve never experienced anything like that before. It was a once in a lifetime moment.”

The woman’s name was not released because South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

She won the jackpot on a $10 Wild Cash scratch-off game, which she bought at at the Pitt Stop #4 store on Edmond Highway in Pelion, according to the release. That’s near the intersection with Fish Hatchery Road, and less than two miles from the Lexington County Airport.

Rather than play the game immediately after buying it, the woman waited until she got home because the ticket was “pretty,” lottery officials said.

She jumped up from her seat on the porch and started to howl with joy after the third number she scratched off won her the $250,000 jackpot, according to the release.

Lottery officials said the woman overcame 780,000-to-1 odds to win and claim one of the Wild Cash game’s top prizes. Four more of the game’s top prizes remain unclaimed, according to the release.

The winner knows how she plans to spend her newfound fortune, telling lottery officials she’s going to make some home improvements.

Pitt Stop #4 received a commission of $2,500 for selling the winning ticket, according to the release.
