Columbia man finds $100K winner in month-old pile of lottery tickets
A Columbia man found a six-figure winning lottery ticket in a stack he had been saving for more than a month, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.
The man, who was not identified, won $100,000 playing Powerball.
The man said he likes to wait until he has several tickets before checking to see whether he won, according to the lottery statement. The winning ticket was from an Aug. 28 drawing.
The ticket was bought at the Gaz-Bah on Clemson Road in Columbia. The numbers matched four of the five white balls, as well as the red Powerball. Because he paid an extra $1 for the PowerPlay option, he doubled his winnings from $50,000 to $100,000.
The odds of winning $50,000 are one in 913,129, according to lottery officials.
Though he’s walking away with $100,000, the man said he was disappointed he was one number short of the jackpot.
What is he going to do with the money he did win?
“My wife has plans for that,” he told the lottery commission.
